In Tango Fleet the
species you chose will have a profound effect on every aspect of your
character, your name, your social skills, your behaviour, etc. It's
best to choose one you are familiar with, rather than a species you
have seen once in the show and kind of liked.
The easiest species to play is understandably a human. But many players go with other more "popular" species such as Betazoids, Vulcans, Klingons, and Bajoran. Tango Fleet does allow some more exotic species, such as Cardassians, and Romulans, but you have to have a believable reason in your biography explaining why that particular species has been able to entered starfleet. This guide has been
made to help you understand the physiology of the species you have
chosen, or if you are playing a medical character to help you add more
detail in your posts. The guide is constantly being updated, so
if you do not find what you are looking for just email one of the
medical corps staff and they will be happy to try and help you.
To navigate just click
on the species you want to see. To come back up just click the
badge next to the name.
Cardiovascular
Information Average Blood Pressure: 80/40 (Systolic/Diastolic). Average
Pulse: 242 BPM (Beats Per Minute). Blood
Coloration: Green dilated blood vessels. Vulcan
blood is a copper-based compound and is green in colour. Copper-based
life aids in the utilization of oxygen under the low atmospheric
pressure, low oxygen conditions on Vulcan. Blood cells are biconvex in
contrast to the concave cells of Terrans. This convex shape also aids
in cooling individual blood cells, the entire blood stream, and
finally the entire Vulcan body. Another feature of the Vulcan blood
cell is its ability to take in and store large amounts of oxygen in a
thin, oxygen-poor atmosphere. Neurological
Information The
Vulcan eye is protected by a clear inner eyelid (nictating membrane)
that filters out harmful radiation, heat and dust, all elements
present on Vulcan. The eye itself if very similar to the human eye
except for its range of colour differentiation for high frequency
waves (the ultra-violet range) which is less acute, while night vision
(low frequency waves in the infra-red) is more acute. Brain
same overall structure and size (1600 cc) as that of the Terran
midbrain area larger and more complex. Respiratory The
Vulcan nose is very similar to the Terran nose, but not nearly as
efficient an instrument of smell. It is, however, highly adapted to
filtering air and passing it on to the lungs. Since 60% of taste is in
the sense of smell, Vulcans have a notorious lack of taste sensation. Their
lungs are somewhat larger in size than Terran. The
alveoli are 75% more elastic than Terrans (making them better oxygen
absorbers). Gastrointestinal Vulcan
excretes only 50% of the liquid matter that the kidney processes. The ductless glands of
the Vulcan are, unlike those of Terrans, under self-control and not
autonomous systems. The individual adult Vulcan can regulate the
amount of adrenaline and so speed up or slow down their internal
systems in response to environmental conditions. The thyroid can also be
controlled to change metabolism. By stopping the flow of thyroxin and
adrenaline, the Vulcan can go into a state of suspended animation,
very much like the trance state of the Indian Fakir. During this state
of suspended animation, the Vulcan can command bodily resources
(blood, lymph etc.) to repair damage. Thus, the Vulcan can control
bodily functions that are considered autonomous by Terrans. Reproductive Vulcan
male is only capable of sex approximately once in seven years. MUST
mate every 7 years during pon farr. Musculoskeletal Males
- lacking supraorbital taurus (bony ridges) above the eye like
Terrans. 28
Teeth with no rear molars. Dolecephalic
(long-headed). Skin The Vulcan epidermis,
unlike human outer skin, is a two-way moisture-proof shield. Not only
does it act as a waterproof barrier allowing cells to live in a fluid
environment even in relatively dry air, as does human skin, it also
allows available environmental moisture to be extracted for use by the
body. Highly specialized
cells in the dermis, known as hyalothermonic cells, permit more
efficient body heat loss with retention of water than does human skin
(because of an absence of these specialty cells). These unique skin
properties, along with the absence of sweat glands, are necessary for
Vulcan life, and explain the survival of the species in view of the
environmental conditions of everyday life on Vulcan. Miscellaneous Average
Height = Male = 2.0 meters (6'6"); Female = 1.7 meters
(5'6") Body
Temperature = 32.78C (91F) Dispersion
of heat through radiation (no sweat glands) in the hyalothermonic
cells. Average Life Expectancy
= 250 Standard years. Vulcans are almost
always strictly vegetarian. Special
Traits The
Vulcan mind meld is a psionic technique normally employed only by
Vulcans. It is a deeply
personal thing, part of the private life, and not normally used on
aliens. Melding is not
telepathy; those in a meld share consciousness in a kind of gestalt. Physical
contact is required. The
initiator places the tips of his fingers at key locations on the head
of the other participant. This
allows him to place pressure on key nerves and blood vessels to
facilitate the link. If successful, the link results in a merging of both minds
essentially creating a single consciousness in two bodies.
Only the subject in physical contact with the initiator
participates in the meld, others in the vivinity are not affected. Melding
carries some risk. It can be physically debilitating for both parties.
The pressure changes can potentially aggravate existing
conditions. The melding
results in some loss of identity, and can be difficult to break,
especially when the subjects mind is powerful or dynamic.
After effects can be treated with the drug lexorin. At
the conclusion of the meld, each mind retains some knowledge of the
other. It
is possible to force a mind meld on an unwilling subject, but most
Vulcans refuse to unless it is absolutely necessary.
Susceptibilities Pon
Farr is an ancient drive that impels the Vulcan to return home to take
a mate, or die. Neurochemical imbalance leading to nervousness,
sleeplessness, outbursts of anger and violence... he can even become
unaware of his actions. if nothing is done about it, the physical and
emotional pressures will simply kill him Pa'nar
Syndrome is a Vulcan disease that results in the degradation of the
synaptic pathways. It also affects the endocrine and immune systems.
It is caused by a disruption of neuroelectric impulses during Vulcan
mind melds performed by a Vulcan who has been improperly trained. It
can be cured by a meld performed by an experienced melder. Bendii
Syndrome is a rare illness after age 200, causes loss of emotional
control, which can be telepathically projected to others. Cardiovascular 8
Chambered Heart as organ redundancy. Lavender/Pink
blood based on metal ion manganese content. Respiratory Three
lungs. Gastrointestinal Two
livers. Musculoskeletal Heavy
chest plates, reinforced central nervous system (spine/skull) Reproductive Klingon
pregnancies normally run thirty weeks, but with mixed species,
gestation times are shorter. The odds against Klingon-human
conceptions are rather high; however, when successful, Klingon and
human metabolisms sometimes clash causing biochemical fluctuations in
the mother, which may lead to fainting. Klingon traits remain dominant
for several generations, even with a single ancestor, therefore a
child even 1/4 Klingon will still possess forehead ridges. After
birth some Klingon infants may experience a pronounced curvature to
the spine, which may be corrected for by surgery. This
"defect" tends to run in Klingon families, especially among
females. Federation medicine, fortunately, has advanced beyond that
allowing an additional choice of treatment which involves genetic
modification. Miscellaneous brak'lul
- Organ Redundancy. This
means that all vital bodily functions have a ‘back up’, such as
their two livers. This
organ redundancy has evolved in the Klingons due to the frequency and
often severe injuries sustained day to day. Often
suffer from allergies, most notably the allergy to small furry
creatures such as Tribbles. They
have no tear ducts. Shattering
the cranial exoskeleton at the tricipital lobe kills instantly. Rop’nGor
is a measles like disease that Klingon children can suffer from. Neurological Joined
trill come up with two separate brain wave patterns when scanned using
conventional medical tricorders. Special
Traits Twin
columns of spots from forehead to feet. Capable
of hosting vermiform symbiont in abdominal cavity. Susceptibilities Interdependent
host/symbiont within 83 hours Isoboromine
levels are critical if they fall below 50 and the symbiont will need
to be removed from the Trill. Isoboromine is a neuro-transmitter like chemical
that links host/symbiont brain patterns. Symbionts
are highly allergic to insect bites and toxins, nerve gasses and other
chemical agents. Joined
Trill have slightly heightened senses of smell, taste and hearing. Miscellaneous The
Trills basic physiology is very similar to Terran and should be
treated basically as a Terran. Cardiovascular
Bolians
are known for their Blue Blood. Bolians
have a blood chemistry very different from that of other species,
especially Vulcans. If a blood transfusion is given from a Vulcan to a
Bolian it would result in the death of the Bolian. There have been
instances, however, when artificial blood was unavailable and existing
blood cells were genetically altered for inter-species transfusions to
be successful. Musculoskeletal Bolians
are distinguished by a bifurcating (cartilaginous) ridge running
vertically along their heads and bodies. They also have cartilaginous
lining on their tongues that allows them to consume foods not normally
palatable by many Federation races, including strong acids. Skin Their
skin tone is generally blue, some may have dark blue bands on the
head. Reproductive Intimate
relations between Bolians and humans typically cause adverse effects
to the latter, which may include fatigue, nausea and joint
inflammation. Musculoskeletal Bajorans
resemble terrans in appearance, and are distinguished by a series of
four to seven creases across their noses. Cardiovascular Bajoran
heart is mirrored along a horizontal axis unlike a terran heart which
is mirrored along a vertical axis.
A puncture
in the lower ventricle of the heart will cause instantaneous death. Reproductive Bajoran
women gestate for only five months, forming an intricate network of
blood vessels between the mother and the fetus. During the pregnancy,
Bajoran women are frequently afflicted by bouts of uncontrollable
sneezing. Neurological Betazoids
reach rapid eye movement (REM) sleep at a different frequency from
other humanoids. Special
Traits Telepathy,
most develop this ability in adolescence, a few are born with their
telepathic abilities already active. Unable to screen out the noise of
other peoples minds, these individuals generally suffer mental
problems of varying severity. Unable
to read the minds of Ferengi, Breen, Ullians or Dopterians Reproductive Betazoids
can cross-breed with terrans, although this often affects the
telepathic abilities of the offspring and most commonly the children
of such a union develop empathic rather than telepathic abilities. Miscellaneous Externally,
Betazoids are among the most humanoid species on record and are
outwardly indistinguishable from terrans in every aspect but one, the
irises of their eyes are completely black. Cardiovascular Intravenous
injection impossible, must perform intermuscular injections instead. Cobalt
based blood Miscellaneous Most
Andorians have a distinctive blue skin and white or silver hair. A
sub-species of Andorians known as the Aenar have white skin; unlike
the blue Andorians, the Aenar are blind and telepathic. Andorians
have a higher metabolism than humans. Antennae Andorians
have on their heads two knobbed antennae which are used for balance.
An Andorian is partially disabled and unable to fight immediately
following the loss of an antenna, but is able to compensate within a
day or so. The antenna itself can take up to nine months to regrow on
its own, although the regeneration can be completed in around half
that time with electrical stimulation and cranial massage therapy. The
loss of an antenna is a humiliating experience for an Andorian to come
to terms with. Antenna
movement apparently expresses feelings as well. An Andorian will
sometimes point their antennae at a potential mate to signify
attraction. Susceptibilities Andorians
are very susceptible to high temperatures, an Andorian can lose 10% of
its body weight in as little as two days in climates approaching the
boiling point of water. Musculoskeletal Externally,
Cardassians are easily recognizable by their two thick vertical neck
ridges that recede back to the crown of the head and an inverted
tear-shaped ridge in the center of the forehead. The ridge is thickest
immediately above the eyes, protecting the eyes and making them look
especially deep-set.All cardassians also have 2 secondary spinal cords
on either side of their primary spinal column. Physically,
Romulans are almost identical to their ancestors, having the same
pointed ears and converging eyebrows as the Vulcans. Externally most
Romulans differ from Vulcans in having prominent ridges of bone on
their foreheads. Though identical in almost every way to their
cousins, the Romulans lack the rigorous mental disciplines developed
by the followers of Surak. They are a passionate people, easily moved
to extreme emotions. Thanks
